Welcome to The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee! I first saw the original production of this musical on Broadway when I was in college in New York City. The show played at the Circle in the Square, which was right next door to the Gershwin Theatre, where Wicked was playing. I immediately fell in love with …Spelling Bee because it showed me the possibilities of what a musical could be. There was no spectacle, no large ensemble, no well-known source material. And yet, I was on the edge of my seat, from beginning to end in anticipation of who the winner would be.
This quirky musical is more than meets the eye. William Finn’s music is catchy, clever, and heartbreaking all within one score. We meet six wildly different young spellers who share in the high pressures of competing in the bee. They have one ultimate goal: to be the champion. While it seems like there can only be one winner in the competition, I challenge that notion: What can the losers ultimately win and gain from this experience? In our fast-paced world, where kids are expected to grow up so quickly, I often think back to my childhood, where it seemed like there was all the time in the world. Revisiting this musical as an adult, I feel so much more for these young characters because I now have something they don’t have yet: perspective.
I love the theatre because it provides an opportunity for strangers to come together and have a communal experience. It is something our culture is severely lacking at this moment in time. This sense of connection is illustrated beautifully in this show, as we find ourselves rooting for different spellers, including those from the audience; Something I really love about this piece. We become more invested and connected to each speller as we learn about their backstories, from their dysfunctional family lives to their longing for connection. I hope that as you leave the show, you become curious about the stories of the people whom you pass by in life, encouraging you to seek out those connections.
This production would not have been possible without a team of support. To ALL of the students, faculty, and staff involved in every aspect of this process: THANK YOU. I consider it to be a great privilege to be an artist and to collaborate with other passionate and committed artists.
Enjoy the Bee!
Christopher Shin
A note from the
Dramaturg, Emie Yizhen Liu
Did your school or community theater ever put up The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee as their seasonal musical? I bet many of you, before stepping into this very lobby of the Paramount Theater, have seen this production somewhere else. To be honest, when I first saw the 2025-26 EmStage season plan, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee seemed like the definite outlier of the pack. It’s the classic “school musical,” a show that’s almost too popular for Emerson Stage’s lineup.
However, Spelling Bee’s popularity doesn’t affect its ability to have every audience’s heart. It’s a show that teaches us to have hope, be receptive to our mistakes, and be able to have some grace in moments that require self-compromising.
At first glance, …Spelling Bee may appear somewhat silly, or even peculiar on the surface, as it doesn’t fit into a conventional idea of what a musical should be. This precious quality of breaking musical tradition is what makes it so special with its own flair of charm. With no big opening choreography numbers or grand narrative, Spelling Bee is a heart-warming musical that tells the story through the unique lens of young children. Following the narrative of the show, I invite all the audience to re-learn the philosophy of kids again, to be messy, and to have fun.
