A note from the
Dramaturg, Paige Shepherd

Amour follows meek, but caring, Dusoleil as he explores the magical streets of Montmartre after World War II: this vibrant Parisian neighborhood filled with art and life embodies Paris as it tries to take back its sparkle after the occupation of the Nazis.

But when Dusoleil discovers in himself a magical new superpower, he must decide whether he wants to emerge from his shell and use his new abilities for good, or succumb to his timidity. Will he become the next Robin Hood or disappoint his friends, neighbors, and the beautiful Isabelle?

Navigating the complications of a crumbling infrastructure and brand new government, 1950’s Paris displays two very different faces: the glamorous stars being photographed for the world to see, and the lives of the simple and poor hidden in the dark of the streets. Amour brings us both. We take a stroll through a world where magic is real, but so is the corruption and lingering woe that colors the postwar world.

In 1941, writer and Montmartre resident Marcel Aymé wanted to document both the magic and the gloom of Paris, and in turn wrote the beloved short story “Le Passe-Muraille”, or, “The Man Who Could Walk Through Walls”, the story upon which Amour is based. After Aymé’s death, a statue was erected in his honor in Montmartre – a man stuck halfway in the cobblestone wall of Rue Norvins. For good luck passers-by will often try to pull the statue out of the wall in the hopes that one day someone will free him…

Experience a touch of magic and romance in Dusoleil’s world as it invites us to find the magic in our own lives – and asks us in what ways living in the in-between of our confusing upside-down world make life beautiful?
