A note from the
Director, Bridget Kathleen O’Leary

During the fall of 2024, I found myself listening to the song “The Cult of Personality,” by In Living Color a lot. Beyond just being a really good song, it captures our political system with frightening clarity. The chorus of the song played over and over in my head as I listened to all the talking heads telling me what I should be concerned with in regard to economics, gender, foreign policy, immigration and so forth. Sadly, as I have gotten older, I find it easier and easier to put my wants and needs into smaller buckets so that I can stomach voting for somebody that doesn’t hold all my values, but at least cares about my top three issues. I find myself craving a Cult of Personality who can come forward and say everything I want to hear in a way that makes me believe them and incites me to work towards some huge goal while at the same time making me feel like it is totally achievable.

And yet, as I write these notes, trying hard not to doom scroll my news feed, I am aware that a true Cult of Personality can’t hold the vision and values of a whole country. Democracy exists to regulate the power elected officials can have and ensures that the voices of voters are heard fairly. As you are watching this production today, we are currently existing in a country where a true Cult of Personality is choosing to uplift the values of a very small group of people, excluding the majority and not considering what our whole community wants and needs. Yet, where Julius Caesar hits a little too close for me isn’t in the character of Julius Caesar. I am shaken by the Citizens at the end of Act 3. Like me, they are group of people that are desperate to feel seen, empowered
and incited. Over the course of their eulogy, Antony uses the feelings of scarcity and marginalization the citizens are feeling to provoke an insurrection. In the end, when it seems like everything is finished, the cycle just begins again.

Ultimately, the citizens didn’t need the Cult of Personality of Brutus or Antony. None of us do. There is no one person that can give every one of us all our wants and needs without neglecting the desires of somebody else. Until we find a balance in our system, we will continue to cycle back and forth too far in one direction and not far enough in another.
